FAQ

Is the Berserker good in Command An Army?
Yes, and better than it used to be. The 1.5 patch nerfed archer range, which removed the Berserker's worst matchup, and creators moved it up to S tier as a result. It shreds units once it reaches them.
What does the Berserker lose to?
Flame Archers, unless it charges them directly. Creators are specific about this: the Berserker will not survive against Flame Archers in a straight approach, so the charge has to be committed rather than gradual.
Berserker or Samurai — which should I use?
Samurai is the safer pick. It deals high damage with more bulk and beats any cavalry in prolonged combat. The Berserker has more damage but is relatively squishy, so it needs shields or a committed charge to work.
How much does the Berserker cost in stars?
Four stars — the same as Spartan, Samurai, Lancer and Immortal. On a small account that is a large share of the star limit, so the Berserker competes directly with those units for your damage budget.
How do I keep a Berserker alive?
Put shields in front of it and commit the charge when you send it. A Berserker that walks toward archers at half speed dies before it arrives; one that is sent behind a shield line or charged directly into the target does the damage it is built for.

What the Berserker is

Berserker is a 4-star special unit — the same rarity band as Spartan, Samurai, Lancer and Immortal — and it is pure damage. It has no defensive role, no utility and no ranged option. You buy it to shred units, and everything else about the unit follows from that.

The 1.5 patch made it

The Berserker is the clearest example of how much one balance patch can move this game.

The 1.5 patch cut archer range hard. That nerf was aimed at Archers, but its largest effect landed on every melee unit that used to die on the approach. Creators put it directly: “With the archer nerfs, I really think they could shine more.”

The result is a unit that moved up to S tier without being changed itself. Its worst matchup got worse for the other side.

That is worth internalising for how you read tier lists in this game: a ranking is a snapshot of the current patch, not a property of the unit. The tier list says so at the top, and the Update 2 guide covers the other half of the balance story.

What it still loses to

The archer nerf did not delete ranged units — it moved the problem to the 3-star Flame Archer, which stayed S tier.

Creators are specific about the matchup: the Berserker “won’t survive against flaming archers unless you charge them directly.” A gradual approach loses. A committed charge wins.

That is a mechanical distinction, not a numbers one. Flame Archer has arched shots and ignite damage, so it can keep hitting a Berserker during the walk in. A direct charge shortens the window that damage can land.

Berserker versus Samurai

Both are 4-star damage units and both are rated highly, so the choice comes down to how much protection you can give them.

Berserker Samurai
Damage Higher High
Bulk Relatively squishy More survivable
Vs cavalry Beats any cavalry in prolonged combat
Rating S tier A tier (some sources S)

The practical read: Samurai is the safer pick and Berserker is the higher-ceiling one. If your lineup has shields to hide behind, Berserker converts that protection into more damage. If it does not, Samurai survives long enough to matter.

There is a second argument for Samurai that is easy to miss: it beats cavalry in prolonged fights, which means it can hold ground against the unit class that exists to kill your back line. Berserker does not do that.

How to use it

Send it behind shields, not in front. The shield line exists to eat the first volley — that is exactly the damage that would otherwise kill a Berserker. The Shieldman line is the cheap version of that protection.

Commit the charge. Half-committing a Berserker against Flame Archers is the way to lose it for nothing. If you send it, send it at the target.

Do not use it to hold a point. It has no defensive tools and no ranged option, so standing still is the worst thing it can do.

Check the star cost against your budget. At 4 stars it competes directly with Spartan, Samurai, Lancer and Immortal. On a small account, fielding a Berserker usually means not fielding something else — the star limit guide walks through the maths with a worked example.

Where it sits

Berserker is S tier on the best units tier list as of September 2026. For what it is good against, see the unit counters guide; for the unit that protects it, the Shieldman line; and for the account-level decision, the star limit guide.
